This year’s m4music features one of the most exciting voices from South Africa: Petite Noir. Raised in Cape Town, musician Yannick Ilunga has a penchant for 1980s new wave, which he combines with afrobeat. He himself calls his sound “Noirwave”. The term also stands for a social movement on the African continent, an issue which the 29-year-old also addresses on his second album. La Maison Noir revolves around ideas of diaspora and identity.
