The singer, instrumentalist, actress and activist Brandy Butler and composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Michael League (Snarky Puppy) invite the community into a conversation about recentering jazz within its cultural context. They will create a space for discussion which reflects on past practices of understanding and relating to jazz, while encouraging the growth of a new emergent strategy- one that recenters the community and sees jazz as inextricable from the culture from which it came. Through the lens of their very different experiences as musicians, they will share their thoughts on what steps can be taken to engage with this music (among others) in ways that foster awareness, growth, understanding, development of one’s own voice, and innovation, and above all, respect for the culture and community that birthed and continues to evolve it. Additionally, they speak about the importance of curiosity as a tool to build a deeper understanding of the music itself as well as what we can do, starting today, to help shape positive change in our own local spheres.
